Preliminary Finals are only required if there are more than 64 finalists in any one year group of our competitions and ALL will be held on one of the two nights listed above (dependent on the release of 2018 State Of Origin dates which is why there are two consecutive days listed). The QDU had preliminary finals in the Year 8 competition for the first time in 2017 and we expect this to continue again with our current competition sizes.

COMPETITION FORMAT

(Please note NEW (earlier) start times in 2018)

The QDU Secondary Schools Competition consists of four preliminary debating rounds held throughout terms one and two, followed by a finals series held in term three. The preliminary round debates are held at selected schools throughout South East Queensland.

Grade Eight debates are scheduled to commence at 6.00 pm, 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm in the first three rounds of the competition. To accommodate preparation time for the secret subject debate in round four of the year 8 competition, the debates are scheduled for 6:45 pm and 8:00 pm.  The exact time of all debates is set out in the competition draw.

Grade Nine debates are scheduled to commence at 6:00 pm, 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm in rounds 1,2 and 4 of the competition. To accommodate preparation time for the secret subject debate in round three of the year 9 competition, the debates are scheduled for 6:45 pm and 8:00 pm.

For Grades Ten – Twelve, debates commence at 6:45 pm and 8:00 pm in all rounds.

All Senior A debates are scheduled for 6:45 pm and will be held at the one central venue

Please note that the above times are the start times of the debate. In the event of a secret subject round, students need to be present 75 minutes earlier to prepare.

The Finals Series follows the preliminary rounds of the competition. The QDU Executive compiles a finals draw which includes all teams that win three or more debates at the end of the preliminary rounds. Depending upon the number of teams eligible for the Finals, there may be a need to host preliminary finals (see above).
