TOOWOOMBA FINALS DATES

  • Thursday, 13 July 2017 – Preliminary Finals (if required)
  • Wednesday, 19 July 2017 – Finals Three
  • Wednesday, 26 July 2017 – Quarter Finals
  • Wednesday, 2 August 2017 – Semi Finals

Preliminary Finals in the Toowoomba competitions are only required if there are more than 16 finalists in any one year group of our competitions. The QDU has come close a couple of times but this date has not been required in Toowoomba for a number of years under the current format that we use. For “insurance” reasons, we still choose to keep this date available…JUST IN CASE.

COMPETITION FORMAT

The QDU Secondary Schools Competition consists of four preliminary debating rounds held throughout terms one and two, followed by a finals series held in term three. The preliminary round debates are held at selected schools throughout South East Queensland.

Prepared topic debates for Toowoomba based Year 7, 8 and 9 competitions are scheduled to commence at 6.00 pm, 7.00 pm and 8.00 pm

All other debates in the Toowoomba competition are scheduled to commence at 7:00 pm and 8:15 pm. The exact time of all debates is set out in the competition draw.

Please note that the above times are the start times of the debate. In the event of a secret subject round, students need to be present 75 minutes earlier to prepare.

The Finals Series follows the preliminary rounds of the competition. The Toowoomba region finals are generally hosted at the one school. The QDU Executive compiles a finals draw which includes all teams that win three or more debates at the end of the preliminary rounds. Depending upon the number of teams eligible for the Finals, there may be a need to host preliminary finals.

Postponement Dates
To make things a little easier we have dedicated postponement dates in the calendar, which will be the first dates considered after a postponement is granted by the QDU under the QDU Rules and communicated in writing to both schools involved.
The 2017 postponement dates are:
Wednesday, 8 March 2017 (For Year 7, 8 and 9 only)
Wednesday, 15 March 2017
Wednesday, 26 April 2017 (For Year 7, 8 and 9 only)
Wednesday, 10 May 2017 (For Year 7, 8 and 9 only)
Wednesday 31 May 2017Failing the utilisation of these dates, the QDU’s default position is to try an place postponed debates on “other” debating nights
(e.g. Year 10 postponements to be on nights and at venues where we have Years 7, 8 and Year 9 debating)
