Senior A  (Brisbane only)

This is a special championship grade composed of no more than 16 teams. At least one member must have previously nominated for the State Team, or be included in this year’s trial, and most Senior A debaters are expected to nominate as trialists for the QDU State team.

Senior A uses a ‘World Schools’ style of debate.  This style is used at the National and International Schools competitions and University competitions. Please note that the 3rd and 4th round of debates will be a Short Prep debates with the topics handed out at 5:55 pm.

Speeches in Senior A will be of 8 minutes duration.  Warning bells are rung once at 1 minute and 7 minutes and twice at 8 minutes.  A triple bell is rung at 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Between the 1 and 7 minute bells, opposition debaters may offer points of information.

At the conclusion of the six speeches, reply speeches of 4 minutes with a warning bell at 3 minutes, will be offered in reverse order (Negative then Affirmative).  These may be made by the team’s first or second speaker.

Brisbane Summer School will provide sessions on how to debate in this style.
